Therapies Explained

Somatic Trauma Therapy

Therapeutic approach that truly emphasises the mind-body connection . It bases on new breakthrough science research that proves that trauma and stress can become trapped in the body, manifesting as physical symptoms or somatic experiences.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, somatic therapy works with the physical sensations in the body (soma - means body) as a way to process and heal from traumatic experiences by closing the stress cycle.

This form of therapy incorporates physical techniques, such as deep breathing, relaxation exercises, and movement, to help release the stored tension and trauma in the body.

When we experience trauma, the Salience Network - the part of the brain responsible for deciding what is relevant and what is a threat - becomes chronically hijacked. It keeps the body locked in a constant threat response, even when the environment is safe.

SE - Somatic Experience is based on the work of American psychologist Dr Peter Levine who believes trauma is primarily biological. His theory is based on observations of wildlife. Animals in the wild frequently face threats to their life but don’t become traumatised. When confronted with danger their survival instinct kicks in, and there is a mobilisation of energy to enable effective defensive action – fighting, fleeing or freezing. When the danger passes all that intense energy is discharged and the animal returns to full normal health. This discharge of energy may appear as shaking, deep breaths, running and heat dissipating from the body for example.

The therapy process is supported by resources that will be unique to the client. Resources bring about a sense of safety and goodness to the body and mind, and can be internal e.g. sense of humour, your back’s contact with the chair, or external e.g. an object in the room, a much-loved family member, a place.

By working slowly, step by step, in this way, the distressing cycle of symptom escalation can potentially be reversed, and you can gain a steady confidence in your ability to work with the trauma in a safe, conscious and life-affirming way.

You will not be asked to tell your 'story' or examine the past although over the course of sessions this may come up and is of course welcome. Instead, you will be guided to gently release physical tensions, emotions and energy related to the trauma as they arise in the session, at a pace, and in a way that best supports you to return to a natural state of wellbeing and readiness for life.

Somatic therapy provides a powerful pathway for healing trauma, offering a bridge between the mind and body that traditional therapies might overlook. By addressing the physical manifestations of trauma, it can help to find a more comprehensive and holistic path to recovery.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a hands-on therapy that uses gentle, sustained pressure to release these fascial restrictions. Unlike other massage techniques that focus on muscles, MFR works specifically with your connective tissue to restore movement and reduce pain.  It can store emotional and physical memories for survival reasons. Unwinding the fascia can sometimes bring up the sensations and feelings when we are working on areas from previous injuries or traumas. It can also be a very relaxing meditative sensation when unwinding.

How Does Myofascial Release Work?

The magic of MFR lies in its gentleness. Instead of forcing tissues to release, we apply slow, sustained pressure that “invites” your fascia to let go naturally. This might involve:

  • Cross-hand stretches that gently separate restricted areas

  • Skin rolling to improve tissue mobility

  • Sustained holds that allow fascia to soften gradually

  • Gentle traction to decompress tight areas

What makes MFR unique is that we often work without oil or lotion. This gives us a better grip on your skin and allows us to effectively stretch and manipulate the fascial layers beneath.

The Science Behind Fascial Restrictions

Your fascia is incredibly smart. When it detects threat, injury, or ongoing stress, traumatic event - it tightens up to protect you. Because everything in your body is connected through fascia, we don’t always treat where you feel pain. A shoulder problem might require work on your hips. Neck tension could stem from restrictions around your ribs or diaphragm.

What Conditions Can Myofascial Release Help?

Emotional and Nervous System Support:

  • Stress and anxiety held in the body

  • Trauma recovery (as part of a comprehensive approach)

  • Sleep disturbances related to physical tension

  • General overwhelm and need for nervous system reset

Chronic Pain Conditions:

  • Fibromyalgia and widespread muscle sensitivity

  • Lower back pain that won’t respond to traditional treatment

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Long-standing neck and shoulder tension

Specific Issues:

  • TMJ (jaw tension) and tension headaches

  • Repetitive strain injuries

  • Post-surgical adhesions and scar tissue

  • Sports injuries that haven’t fully healed

What to Expect During a Myofascial Release Session?

MFR feels different from traditional massage. You’ll experience slow, sustained pressure that gradually increases as your tissues respond. Many clients describe it as a “slow melting” sensation — not painful, but deeply releasing.

Your body might feel different immediately, or changes might unfold over the following days. Some people feel taller, lighter, or more “in their body.” Others notice improved sleep or reduced anxiety.

Somatic Massage

Somatic Massage focus on the body awareness, sensations showing the path to buried emotions long time ago , hidden deep down from the word but manifest as a tightness, discomfort or even pain. Somatic Massage treats the body as a whole - every tension, every pain has got it’s own story to tell. With the slow movements, with the safe space to be, with relaxed body and mind, these emotions can be finally heard and seen. This is when the body emotional healing is starting. Blending somatic approach, breathwork, guided body awareness and myofascial release techniques, it can help to release emotional traumas stored in the body.

This approach makes people more aware of how their emotions can manifest in their physical bodies and enables them to foster healing from the inside out.
